Take a look at this stat-line and to begin, pay particular attention to two categories: kills and digs. Go ahead, take a minute. This is a "stats" post, so soak it in:
There are six double-doubles in there (interestingly, in two groups of three straight) and what I think could be up to four additional "almost double-doubles". So, that's 10 out of 13 matches with either a double-double or almost a double-double. That's pretty darn good, right?
Now, how many of those matches would you say are low-production matches? Maybe two? The Wichita State and the Sam Houston matches, possibly? That's not very many matches to have a dip in production across an entire pre-conference schedule, right?
This is the season line for freshman outside hitter Avery Koonsen and my point is that her consistency to this point needs to be celebrated and highlighted. Amidst a pre-conference season that has had its ups-and-downs for the 'Jacks, Koonsen has been remarkably consistent. Or, shall we say Koonsistent. It is REMARKABLE that a freshman outside hitter asked to hold down a six rotation responsibility has been able to begin her collegiate career with such amazing steadiness. Plus, if that calm, cool (kool?) stat line on kills and digs isn't enough, check out the aces column! There is already a "5" and a "4" in there and Koonsen leads the team with 14 aces. That's twice as many as our player who has second most aces on the team. During last weeks' matches, Koonsen was second among all our servers in team points scored when she served (Kennedy Jones was first).
Over her last six matches, Koonsen is AVERAGING over a double-double per match. During that time she has exactly 66 kills and 66 digs, so that's good for 11 kills and 11 digs per match during that span.
Now, check out the SEASON totals: she is two digs shy of averaging a double double for the ENTIRE SEASON! 😮138 kills and 128 digs comes out to 10.6 kills per match and 9.8 digs per match.
So, we've coined a new phrase: Koonsistency. Her name is Avery. Avery Koonsistent.
